Mrs. Bakula’s Social Studies Information
Hello Parents!
Just a note to introduce myself and give you some information regarding your child’s Social Studies class for this 2009-10 school year.
This will be my eighth year of teaching eighth graders with the Hortonville School District. Prior to this, I stayed at home with my own three children. I survived these wonderful years with my own children and truly enjoy these fascinating years. I just sent my youngest off to college in California as a national exchange student (her second semester will have her in France). My son finished up at UW-Madison and is in Chicago . My oldest will start her fourth year of teaching in Pewaukee (she just got engaged!). Before my own children’s births, I taught for seven years in Wausau. I’m thrilled to have been given the opportunity to return to the teaching profession.
The curriculum for the eighth grade Social Studies covers the social sciences. We will cover a broad range of studies including geography, history, politics, economics, psychology and sociology. Current events will also be covered using a variety of resources. Writing assignments, using the 6-traits, will be incorporated into the Social Studies curriculum as well.
Grading will be based on percentages in four different categories. Each category will carry a 25% weight-homework, projects, quizzes and tests. Check with your child as to where they are in reference to their current grade.
In terms of late work, students will be given three opportunities each quarter to receive a late pass allowing them to turn in an assignment one day late. Any daily assignment after one day late, or after using up the three late passes, will receive a zero on that particular assignment.
Please feel free to e-mail me at bonniebakula@hasd.org regarding any concerns or information relevant to your child. Assignments and goals can be found in the assignment link. I welcome any feedback and look forward to a successful new year filled with enthusiasm and new experiences.
With appreciation,
